AIDS Walk: Greencastle

The Greencastle AIDS Walk is an annual philanthropic event held by the Elegua Chapter, which works to promote HIV/AIDS awareness to the DePauw community as well as the Greencastle community.

This event started when we noticed that AIDS Walks would happen in major city across the nation but rarely took place in small towns like Greencastle. After having received feedback from students who would usually support AIDS Walk in their hometowns, the Elegua Chapter decided to team up with the Mayor of Greencastle to host Greencastle’s first ever AIDS Walk.

Our vision for the walk is to get the community involved in the conversations that must be held to teach the members of our generation more about the epidemic that has claimed the lives of numerous individuals since 1981. By teaming up with both campus and local organizations/businesses, the walk is designed to be a fun and energetic way to get the community involved, and despite the inclement weather that occurred at our first annual walk, the participants never seemed to lose their enthusiasm for the cause.

As a thank you, the Elegua Chapter hosts a BBQ for all participates to enjoy a meal and good company and indulge in discussions about the walk, the significance of HIV/AIDS Awareness, and how they can build on their support for their community.
